The Reflecting on Practice program is designed for organizations to adopt and implement themselves, rather than having an outside expert come on-site or sending select individuals out to participate. This poster was presented at the 2021 National Science Foundation (NSF) Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) Awardee Meeting. The goal of this two-year project is to examine systemic issues within learning spaces and provide educators with anti-racist approaches that validate and uplift Black learners. Through a combination of media, educator and role model professional development, and intentional outreach, Black SciGirls will create more gender-equitable and anti-racist informal STEM learning environments for Black girls.

A survey-based needs assessment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a research- intensive land grant university, explored ways to meet the goal of increasing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) outreach. 40% of surveyed faculty reported barriers to doing STEM outreach. Over 50% of faculty reported an inability to individually resolve barriers to STEM outreach in ways that ensure broader community engagement in their research through outreach. Although virtual conferences have become commonplace in the age of COVID-19, this format poses both challenges and opportunities for organizers to design, implement, and engage participants in productive and connected ways. This book is a deliverable (requisite) of an NSF (National Science Foundation) grant to share the project outcomes and what we learned from the NSF grant project. From 2018 to 2020, the Emerging Research on Identity, Representation & Inclusion in Museums project team set out to document graduate-level research on identity in the museum field, and support professionals’ ongoing research and publishing on these topics. Researchers at Knology synthesized over 90 graduate student theses about identity and museums from 2000 to 2018.
