The Discovery Center for Evaluation, Research, and Professional Learning (Discovery Center) served as external evaluator for the STEM in the PlayScape project. This report presents highlights from a Fall 2020 evaluation conducted with 69 STEAM teachers from across the U.S., all of whom are part of the National Air and Space Museum's Teacher Innovator Institute (TII). In 2006, the U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) decided to conduct an institution-wide study of their visitors—why they come to the Botanic Garden, how they utilize the space, their level of satisfaction with the experience, and overall effectiveness of the USBG’s exhibitions and interpretation—in order to provide input to a strategic planning process that will align its living collections with its educational mission. In 2015, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (Fairchild), located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, entered into partnership with NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to help advance NASA’s plant research through classroom-based STEM citizen science with a project entitled, Growing Beyond Earth (GBE). This summative evaluation describes the FOSSIL (Fostering Opportunities for Synergistic STEM with Informal Learners) project activities and outcomes. Over the six-year funding period of this project, we developed a community of practice of more than 10,000 participants (via our web site, social media, and app) who share an interest in fossils and paleontology. This report describes the success and challenges of the FOSSIL project.
