In fall 2019, the Bell Museum received funding via a NASA TEAM II grant to create Mars: The Ultimate Voyage, a full-dome planetarium show and accompanying hands-on activities that focus on the interdisciplinary roles that will be needed to send humans to Mars. This report from Catalyst Consulting Group presents the findings from the summative evaluation completed in March–May 2023.
This report provides an overview of the rationale and design of the STEM Excellence Project, the key findings and takeaways from the research, and future directions for raising the aspirations of rural students for success in STEM fields.
The goals of the project were to build an understanding about the perception of career and technical education (CTE) as an option for middle school students in pursuing skill-based STEM-related careers, and to use that information to develop an innovative suite of digital tools designed to improve mentors’ and school counselors’ communication with middle school–aged students.

In partnership with the Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning, we completed year one of a multi-year study on the impact of the Curiosity Machine model on students. There is a specific focus on linking dosage to impact. The constructs that were explored were:
* STEM identities (e.g., how students think of themselves in science)
* “Possible selves” (see STEM as a component of their own career or future learning pathways, e.g., course taking in STEM areas)
* Self-efficacy (e.g., beliefs in their abilities in STEM subject areas, self-perception of confidence in STEM)

The 5-year longitudinal study on Iridescent's Family Science Learning model was conducted with 2,173 participants from 9 schools and museum sites in Los Angeles and New York City. Participants were underserved elementary school students and their parents. Families met once a week for 5 weeks in a row. Five families (~20 participants) came for all 5 years.

The Society for Science and the Public’s Advocate Grant Program provides selected Advocates with funding, resources, and information. Advocates include classroom teachers, school and district administrators, university professors, and informal science educators in community-based programs. The role of the Advocate is to support three or more underserved middle or high school students in the process of advancing from conducting a scientific research or engineering design project to entering a scientific competition. This is the final report from the external evaluator of the project that created MedLab, an interactive learning experiences for Chicago area middle and high school students. This external evaluator's final report summarizes the outcomes and impacts of the five-year (2012-2017) funding compared to project objectives.
