Environmental educators have used guided-inquiry in natural and supportive learning environments for decades, but comparatively little programming and research has focused on experiences in urban environments, including in constructed ecosystems like green roofs, or impacts on older youth and adults. This project continues the work of "Tinkering EU: Contemporary Education for Innovators of Tomorrow" that introduced Tinkering methodology in Europe. It also builds upon the work of "Tinkering EU: Building Science Capital for ALL" that explored Tinkering and Science Capital with a specific focus on teachers and students from disadvantaged communities. "Tinkering EU: Addressing the Adults" focusses on fostering the socio-educational and personal development of adults.

Tinkering, inspired by the USA-based experience of the Exploratorium of San Francisco, is proven to be a powerful tool that contributes to the improvement of key competences and skills, and connects science knowledge and skills with the requirements of the contemporary labour market.

The project aims to foster the socio-educational and personal development of adults, as well as their participation in civic and social life, focusing on the following priorities:


Stronger science engagement
Need for 21st Century skills
Low science capital

The pilot and feasibility study will develop instructional workshops for an adult population of quilters to introduce them to computational thinking. By leveraging pre-existing social structures, skill sets, and engagement in quilting, the researchers hope to help participants develop computer science and computational thinking knowledge and skills. The KQED science news team began a study with Texas Tech University to find out whether stories aimed at generating “awe” would drive deeper engagement with news features. From a preliminary study the team learned people can feel experiences like connectedness and vastness, not only through images but through a written story. The team intended to write their own science stories through an "awe" framework, but the pandemic redirected the team's work, and halted testing of participants’ response to the articles, which would have required the use of Texas Tech's Psychophysiology Lab. We started our three year National Science Foundation Cracking the Code: Influencing Millennial Science Engagement audience research in 2018 with a national survey of millennials’ media consumption habits. This survey was conducted by Jacobs Media Strategies and found, among other things, that millennials were the most science curious generation. During the course of our ongoing collaboration with KQED, my fellow academic researchers and I have learned that science media professionals are especially interested in improving strategies for headline design, with the goal of increasing audience engagement. Their intuitions about the importance of headlines are supported by research findings. At least when browsing on social media platforms, media consumers often make decisions about whether to engage with stories based only off of the headline.
