This poster, which was presented in Alexandria, VA at the CAISE AISL PI meeting in February 2019, summarizes the LabVenture informal learning experience and the research challenge of leveraging a learning ecosystem frame to understand effects this statewide program may have had over its 14+ years at the student, teacher, school, and community levels.
Most environmental learning takes place outside of the formal education system, but our understanding of how this learning actually occurs is in its infancy. By surfing the internet, watching nature documentaries, and visiting parks, forests, marine sanctuaries, and zoos, people make active choices to learn about various aspects of their environment every day. Free-Choice Learning and the Environment explores the theoretical foundations of free-choice environmental education, the practical implications for applying theory to the education of learners of all ages, and the policy implications

Presentation on NSF grant DRL-0610409 (Wild Research: A Whole-Zoo Exhibit and Inquiry Program) presented at the CAISE Convening on Sustainability Science and Informal Science Education, February 6th, 2012.
This white paper is the product of the CAISE Formal-Informal Partnerships Inquiry Group, which began work during a July 2008 ISE Summit organized by CAISE. Their examination of what the authors call "the hybrid nature of formal-informal collaborations" draws on relevant theoretical perspectives and a series of case studies to highlight ways in which the affordances of formal and informal settings can be combined and leveraged to create rich, compelling, authentic, and engaging science that can be systematically developed over time and settings.
