Media MashUp (MMU) was an IMLS funded project (LG-07-08-0113 ) designed to help libraries build capacity for offering computer-based programs for youth. The New Directions in Audience Research Initiative, initially funded by IMLS in 2009, is a special initiative of the University of Washington Museology Graduate Program. New Directions aims to train graduate students in Audience Research & Evaluation within informal learning settings through laboratory style coursework that integrates the strengths of professional and peer mentoring, fieldwork, academics and client-centered experiences. Audience Research & Evaluation is an ever increasing field and one that is integral to all aspects of museum practice. Students who participate in New Directions learn the value of effectively incorporating outcomes based planning and research-based practice into their chosen area of museum practice and become advocates for evaluation within the museum field. Primary partner sites include the Woodland Park Zoo, and the Pacific Science Center who's Evaluation staff assist student teams in designing, implementing and reporting on evaluation projects within their institutions as well as other affiliated partner sites. Past affiliated partner sites include, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, EMP Museum, Frye Art Museum, Henry Art Gallery, Museum of History and Industry, Northwest African American Museum, Seattle Aquarium, and the Washington Park Arboretum.

Westchester Library System, in partnership with Lifetime Arts, ALA's Public Programs Office, and AARP Foundation, will improve, expand, and sustain creative aging programs in public libraries and position libraries as community cornerstones for positive aging. Built on Lifetime Arts' capacity-building model, this initiative reflects new scholarship on the benefits of social engagement and creative expression for healthy aging, employs nationally recognized best practices in arts education, and promotes partnerships between librarians and arts and community organizations. Through the new Lifetime Arts Affiliate Network, up to 150 librarians will participate in in-depth training, receive ongoing technical assistance, participate in a national peer network, and receive support to implement programs in their communities. The program will provide a practical, replicable, and sustainable approach for transforming library services for older adults to align with new knowledge, societal priorities, and collaborative practice.

The Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency's National Digital Stewardship Residency in New York (NDSR-NY) addresses the library profession's lack of staff who are trained to successfully acquire, manage, and preserve digital materials. The three-year project builds on the pilot program (NSDR) developed by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. It will support 10 students in gaining skills and experience to begin successful careers in digital stewardship; increase the number of skilled professionals; and help replicate the model residency program across the country. The NDSR-NY project will transform the landscape of certificate programs by using a blended approach that combines education with practical, hands-on work and by bringing together best practices to build a tested curriculum that teaches core competencies.

Harvard Library's Testing the National Digital Stewardship Residency (NDSR-MA) Model in Massachusetts will test the pilot program (NSDR-DC) developed by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to help 10 students gain the skills, experience, and network to begin successful careers in digital stewardship; to increase the number of skilled digital stewardship professionals; and to aid replication of the model residency program across the country. Students will gain both theoretical understanding and real world experience while host institutions will gain experience, training materials, new tools, professional relationships, and staff. The digital stewardship community at large will have more well-trained and networked professionals and future leaders along with curriculum and training materials to help tackle today's nationwide preservation and curation challenges.

The University of Maryland's project, Curate Cloud: Building Digital Curation Excellence through Professional Education, Cloud Computing and Community Outreach, will provide cultural heritage institutions with tools and resources to help them evaluate, select, and implement digital curation solutions. The project focuses on underrepresented institutions, developing and deploying an innovative research and learning environment that will lower financial, technical, and infrastructure barriers. Twenty mid-career professionals will enroll in a new certificate program to gain theoretical and practical knowledge about digital curation and cloud computing and will design and implement their own cloud-based curated collections. Curate Cloud will help transform the field by developing an open-source research and educational platform and by removing barriers to access for curation tools and resources.

Curating Research Assets and Data using Lifecycle Education (CRADLE): Data Management Education Tools for Librarians, Archivists, & Content Creators is a collaboration among the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill's School of Information & Library Science, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, and the University Libraries. It is focused on helping data librarians, archivists, and information and library science students learn about data management and on providing instruction to data creators in their institutions. The project will result in free online courses on data management for researchers and information professionals to be offered through a "free university" platform as well as face-to-face workshops involving UNC staff, faculty, and students. Support is provided for two CRADLE fellows who will learn about and contribute to the development of this work on effective and efficient data lifecycle management.

The goal of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Academic and Cultural Enrichment (ACE) Scholars: New Americans for Community College Librarianship project is to increase the number of immigrants and refugees in community college librarianship. The project includes a recruitment drive, a targeted and focused curriculum that emphasizes multicultural, multilingual, and community engaged librarianship, and a proven practicum model, the Real Learning Connections. The project will result in a sustainable curriculum as well as a multilingual and multicultural cadre of 10 librarians, ready to serve diverse community college students, and ready to work in community college library environments.

The four New England museums of the Environmental Exhibit Lab (EEC) set out in the Fall of 2011 to create a replicable model of collaborative professional development for small museums. At small institutions, impending deadlines, budget and staffing limitations, and professional isolation all too often get in the way of true innovation. The goal of Exhibit Lab was to help staff who, though conversant with current museum theory, sometimes struggle to apply that theory to their daily work, or to disseminate these ideas through an institution. Exhibit Lab relied on a carefully crafted mix of meetings, workshops and staff exchanges, a combination of outside experts and peer-to-peer mentoring, to foster a community of practitioners, engaged in collaborative learning-by-doing. In short, the participants created a "virtual department" in which we came to rely as quickly on our peers in a partner museum as quickly as we would to a co-worker down the hall had we worked in a larger museum. The Exhibit Lab project focused on the work of the Exhibit and Program/Education staffs, but we feel that the project model holds lessons for other museum departments, and for museums outside the Children's and Science museum sphere.
