Informal STEM learning experiences (ISLEs), such as participating in science, computing, and engineering clubs and camps, have been associated with the development of youth’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics interests and career aspirations. On March 14-15, 2013, representatives of eight members of Coastal America’s Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center (CELC) network met at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California. The primary goal of the workshop was to explore ways of energizing all, or portions, of the network to engage, educate, and empower the public on major coastal, ocean and environmental issues. The particular issue that was used as the point of departure was “Increasing Community Resilience to Extreme Weather-Related Events.” Support for the workshop was provided by the NOAA Office of Education.

This poster was presented at the 2014 AISL PI Meeting held in Washington, DC. The project creates a STEM ecosystem in a severely under-resourced urban community. The Chicago Zoological Society, which operates Brookfield Zoo, is expanding a community partnership with Eden Place Nature Center in Chicago’s Fuller Park Neighborhood and offering a full suite of environmental science learning opportunities for teachers, youth, families, and adults. A research component is led by the University of Illinois at Chicago.
In October 2009, the Tennessee Aquarium began an ambitious program, Connecting Tennessee to the World Ocean (CTWO), funded by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. CTWO consists of several individual projects, all intended to increase the ocean literacy of Aquarium audiences and to promote their adoption of an ocean stewardship ethic. This evaluation report summarizes the extent to which the Aquarium accomplished these goals over the 3-year project period.
