Over 200 zoos and aquariums in North America are accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), with a shared vision of the future: a world where all people respect, value and conserve wildlife and wild places. Through programs & experiences that reach millions of people each year, we hope to encourage caring and empathy towards all living things, but we lack the tools that are needed to assess whether – and how – we’re reaching this goal. The overall goal of this 2 year collaborative project is to create tools that zoos and aquariums can use to assess whether they’re meeting their goal of encouraging caring and empathy towards wildlife. Project partners (Woodland Park Zoo, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, & Seattle Aquarium) aim to develop, test and share tools that can be used by accredited zoos & aquariums to assess whether their educational programs are having the desired impact of encouraging children’s empathy towards animals. To better inform our understanding of the empathic experience and the role it plays in human relationships with animals, an advisory team comprised of conservation psychologists and evaluation practitioners in the zoo and aquarium field, has been formed to aid in this two year project.

On June 20-22, 2008, the Philadelphia/Camden Informal Science Education Collaborative (PISEC) conducted the Bridges Conference for museum/community partnership programs that serve families. The conference was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant (DRL# 0734835), which covered planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination. PISEC is a four-museum partnership focused on education - the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute Science Museum, the New Jersey State Aquarium, and the Philadelphia Zoo. One of PISEC's Initiatives, Community Connections, forged a long-term relationship between museums and urban community organizations to help families learn more about the science education resources available to them in and around their neighborhoods. This document explores the Community Connections initiative, presenting insights and next steps related to the program.

This survey was used as part of the AZA research agenda process. The Visitor Studies Initiative of the CEC has been gathering information about the evaluation and visitor research work that has been conducted at AZA institutions. The goal is to develop a plan for visitor research at our institutions going forward – to identify areas where we are excelling, as well as topics needing further research attention. The survey was sent to education professionals from 77 AZA institutions, and will be used identify holes in the existing framework and/or future opportunities for research.
