RISES (Re-energize and Invigorate Student Engagement through Science) is a coordinated suite of resources including 42 interactive English and Spanish STEM videos produced by Children's Museum Houston in coordination with the science curriculum department at Houston ISD. The videos are aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards, and each come with a bilingual Activity Guide and Parent Prompt sheet, which includes guiding questions and other extension activities.

The Ka Makaiwa: Strengthening Digital Access for Native Hawaiian Futures project will develop an approach to producing online exhibits and related programming for the Bishop Museum. The project will address barriers to physical access to collections expected to continue beyond the pandemic by expanding access to information by developing a high-quality, thoughtfully designed, and user-friendly online exhibit platform. The museum will capture photographs, video footage, and other content from the (Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawaii exhibition, which explores racism and bias in scientific research while celebrating Native Hawaiian voices and collaborative endeavors. The project team will test a beta version internally and conduct a thorough internal review before launching the online exhibit publicly.

The Springfield Science Museum will increase participation in informal science learning by making its educational programs and learning spaces more accessible and inclusive. Museum staff will undergo Disability Inclusion and Universal Design training to redesign and enhance a core multi-use learning space and principle STEM program that can remove physical, cognitive, and social barriers to learning. External evaluators will measure access needs and learning outcomes before and after project upgrades in order to track progress and develop a scalable model of inclusive practice for all the museum’s science programming. The result will be an improved educational experience for visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

The Virginia Air and Space Center will enhance its Space Gallery exhibit and increase its capacity to deliver high-quality, high-impact STEM programming. The museum will purchase, adapt, and install three interactive, digital exhibits that will complement existing displays and enhance visitors’ overall experiences. The digital exhibits will include a moon lander that users can pilot; a simulated Mars rover and micro-copter that will allow guests to navigate a Martian atmosphere and surface; and a stellar playground where users can build their own solar system through an intuitive touch-interface that incorporates planets, stars, violent supernovas, black holes, and other space oddities. The project team will develop new curricula related to the exhibits to use with school groups and summer camps.

The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum will create a mobile cart with hands-on, immersive experiences and educational materials to expand programming to the open-air plaza in front of the museum. To educate visitors about the Chicago River ecosystem, the museum will develop and deliver three live science experiences utilizing the mobile outdoor cart, which will include a 3-D model of a watershed. Additionally, the museum will contract with photographers and a graphic designer to generate content for educational displays and curriculum. By creating a mobile cart with hands-on, immersive experiences and educational materials, the Bridgehouse Museum will reach more diverse audiences on the plaza, which extends onto the Chicago Riverwalk.

The University and Jepson Herbaria at the University of California, Berkeley will develop a series of virtual workshops that promote experiential learning and discovery in the fields of botany, ecology, and conservation biology. The workshops and accompanying recordings will address critical environmental issues. Geared toward lifelong learners, recordings of the lecture portions of the twelve workshops will be made available online and free of charge. The workshops and videos will provide high-quality, museum-based educational resources that demonstrate the value of museum collections and how those collections are used in research and education. By bringing environmental education to a broader audience, this program will educate participants about how each member of a community can contribute to local efforts to protect natural resources.

The Science Museum of Virginia will launch a three-year initiative that empowers participants to effect change in their neighborhoods using citizen science as a tool. The museum will lead a team of residents, business owners, government officials, nonprofits, and health system partners in assessing air quality concerns at the neighborhood level and implementing evidence-based solutions. The museum will also introduce a new platform and interactive software system to display air quality data from this project as well as other visualizations reflecting citizen science data captured in other initiatives. An external evaluator will conduct front-end and formative evaluation to address challenges as they occur and assist the museum in disseminating learnings from the project to the field. The project is designed to build community consensus on strategies necessary to build resilience to climate change while strengthening the museum’s position as a catalyst for science-based decision-making.

ECHO will enhance its capacity to deliver impactful STEM learning experiences for its visitors through the implementation of a re-energized volunteer program. The museum will research innovative practices from the field and build upon best practices from across institutions to overhaul its volunteer training and management systems. Project activities will include building a blended training curriculum, in which volunteers participate in asynchronous and in-person interpretive content, and diversity and inclusion trainings. The museum will also improve its volunteer tracking systems, strengthen staff supervisor training, and revitalize its volunteer recognition and engagement activities. A community of practice will engage three other science centers to inform project activities and assist with the dissemination of a set of training tools adaptable across institutions.

Better understanding guests’ sense of belonging can explain why some feel quite at home in museums while others would never consider visiting. To do so, we start by developing a model of belonging uniquely suited for museums and cultural institutions. Based on literature and expert interviews, it includes three elements of belonging: Inclusion, Place Belongingness and Context of the visit. This study presents an easy-to-use survey instrument designed to measure all aspects of the model. The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago will conduct a research study that measures a sense of belonging for museum guests, helping museums identify and address social exclusion issues. Project activities include developing and testing a survey instrument with museum visitors along with a comparison group of non-museum goers, culminating in the production of the final instrument, a user's guide, and a template to analyze findings. The project will involve nine museums of various types, sizes, audience demographics, and geographic locations collaborating to collect and analyze data and then share the project results with the broader museum community. Project activities will result in an increase in museum staff's awareness of their audience's sense of inclusion, leading to museums that are more responsive and relevant to their communities.

Across the field, leaders are asking—with increasing urgency—how museums can diversify their visitors, staff, and boards; create welcoming and inclusive environments and workplaces; and ensure that museum offerings reflect a broad range of interests, experiences, and needs.
