Since 2006, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) through the Center for Integrating Research and Learning (CIRL) has offered a SciGirls Summer Camp to introduce middle school girls to various fields of science. Code: SciGirls was created in 2017 to increase the engagement in computer science studies and career paths for girls. This consistent commitment to girls in STEM led the SciGirls creators at Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) to invite CIRL to be a partner with them. In the summer of 2021, CIRL & TPT

KQED’s science engagement team is on the front lines of making sure our overall science content, which includes science news and our Deep Look videos, are shared and engaged with on our various social media platforms. One of the platforms we use daily to disseminate our science content is Facebook. To better understand the success of our efforts beyond the usual metrics we track, the science engagement team tested a few Deep Look grant-related research questions using Facebook as a parallel research tool to our grant’s more traditional survey related research.
More specifically, Facebook’s
Media researchers from Texas Tech University, evaluators at Rockman et al, and KQED, a public media organization serving the San Francisco Bay Area, set out to understand the COVID-19 information needs of its community to assist KQED science journalists with their health coverage. The project's activities include regular forums of journalists and social scientists (Slack & Zoom), experimentation with different ways of presenting stats in news graphics and text, focus groups and experiments with audiences, and resources to support journalists beyond our team.
