This poster was presented at the 2014 AISL PI Meeting held in Washington, DC. The project creates a STEM ecosystem in a severely under-resourced urban community. The Chicago Zoological Society, which operates Brookfield Zoo, is expanding a community partnership with Eden Place Nature Center in Chicago’s Fuller Park Neighborhood and offering a full suite of environmental science learning opportunities for teachers, youth, families, and adults. A research component is led by the University of Illinois at Chicago.
In the United States, African Americans are underrepresented in science careers and underserved in pre-collegiate science education. This project engaged African American elementary students in culturally relevant science education through archaeology and thereby increased positive dispositions toward science. This report is the result of a two-year study that sought to provide a sustained, coherent, and proactive effort to identify and develop the future science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) innovators in the United States. The report puts forth several policy recommendations, including: increasing K-12 access to accelerated coursework and enrichment programs; offering more “above-level tests,” especially in economically disadvantaged urban and rural areas; holding schools, and perhaps districts and states, accountable for the performance of the top students at each grade level; and

STARBASE Minnesota strives to increase the knowledge, skills, and interest of inner-city elementary school youth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for greater academic and lifelong success. This study examines the potential long-term impacts of participation, including interest and engagement in STEM, academic achievement, high school graduation, and college enrollment.
