The goal of the Hawaii Science Career Inspiration grant (HiSCI) is to enhance science education resources and training available to teachers and students in disadvantaged communities of Hawaii in order to ensure a maximally large and diverse workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioural and clinical research needs. The HiSCI Program will build on the knowledge gained from two past SEPA grants and the University of Hawaii Center for Cardiovascular Research and leverage resources from all corners of the state to accomplish four specific aims:

1) Increase student interest and exposure to health science careers by providing multiple science exposure opportunities and mentoring along the primary, intermediate, and secondary school experiences for at least 300 students a year and a printed and web-based STEM career resource guide and career posters to alert students, counsellors and teachers to all available opportunities;

2) Provide professional development for 20 middle and high school teachers a year, to include scientific content and foster an understanding of the scientific research process, in addition to medical students mentoring intermediate and high school students;

3) Listen, respond to, and connect the science teacher community in Hawaii by holding innovative listening groups for teachers across the state; and

4) Provide tools and supplies for at least twenty K-12 classrooms a year through a mini-grant process and alert teachers across the state to free resources both locally and nationally. The HiSCI Program is highly relevant to Hawaii’s public health and science infrastructure as it will provide an innovative way to gain knowledge of science training needs and will provide many of the resources to teachers and students across the state by leveraging, communicating and sharing existing resources.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded OMSI funding during the spring of 2011 to create a 2,000 sq. ft. bilingual (English/Spanish) traveling exhibition exploring current research on the human microbiome and the impact of our resident microorganisms on our health. Science Club is an after school program created in partnership between Northwestern University and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago. Every week throughout the academic year, middle school youth (grades 5-8) work in small groups with their graduate student mentors on challenging, hands-on experiments. The six Science Club curricular modules cover topics ranging from biomedical engineering to food science, all with the goals of helping youth to 1) improve their understanding of the scientific method, 2) develop scientific habits of mind, and 3) increase their interest in STEM fields, particularly health-related careers. Science Club serves 60 youth every quarter with the help of 30 trained scientist mentors. Science Club meets three days a week at the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club in Chicago, IL.

Safe Techniques Advance Research – Laboratory Interactive Training Environment (STAR-LITE) is an innovative laboratory safety training created by the National Institutes of Health, Office of Research Services, Division of Occupational Health and Safety, for high school and undergraduate students. The training was designed to incorporate laboratory safety and risk assessment with the architecture of game-based learning. In this respect, STAR-LITE provides student users with a salient educational experience that uses visual and audio clues, strategic thinking, and physical action to enhance the learning experience. The goal of STAR-LITE is to expand the student’s knowledge base with an introduction to safe laboratory and common risk assessment techniques. STAR-LITE comprises a series of pursuit or Quest-based activities that occur in a virtual laboratory environment. Users direct individualized characters, or avatars, to interact and engage with the features in the virtual laboratory to progress through continuous challenges. STAR-LITE provides users with a significant, repeatable educational experience using visual and audio clues, strategic thinking, and physical action to enhance the learning process. This training offers a unique method of instruction by integrating development of critical thinking proficiencies and application of problem solving skills with visualization of consequences, which result from unsafe behaviors. STAR-LITE’s educational content is presented in a virtual laboratory environment in which virtual characters experience exposures to hazardous biological, chemical, and physical hazards with real-life consequences. Student users participate in a series of Quests that require interaction with characters and laboratory equipment. Basic laboratory safety skills and techniques are presented in the training. These skills and techniques include an introduction to potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards that may be present in multi-discipline laboratories; methods to prevent injuries in the laboratory; methods to protect students, colleagues, and the environment from potential hazards in the laboratory; and emergency preparedness and response basics. STAR-LITE was designed to ensure student users walk through a risk assessment process during each Quest. Because STAR-LITE is a digital game-based learning experience, users can repeat the training as many times as they like. The repeatability of this training enhances the student’s learning experience and allows them to pursue different risk assessment decision paths as they progress through the Quest.

Bio Med Tech: Engineering for Your Health was a 2,750 square foot exhibition at the Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) that dealt with issues related to biomedical technology. Partially funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health Science Education Partnership Awards program (NIH/SEPA), the project was developed through a partnership between GLSC and Case Western Reserve University. The Peabody Museum of Natural History's program on Biodiversity and Vector-Borne Disease was successful in meeting all of its goals. The following is a summary of the program in terms of these goals. Goal 1: To build teacher capacity for bringing research in biodiversity and disease ecology to grades 5-11 in an engaging, inquiry-based style. A total of 64 teachers from Connecticut and 4 teacher-trainers from California, Texas, and Wisconsin participated in training institutes to learn about vector-borne diseases. The Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) contracted Randi Korn & Associates, Inc. (RK&A) to simultaneously conduct a remedial evaluation of the exhibition Tissues of Life and its associated elements: the Web site with the same name, presentations at the Demonstration Station, and the What is Life?, play. The National Institutes of Health funded all elements. Data collection took place between July and October 2003. From January - August 2010, the Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center's (KAYSC) Podcast Crew worked to develop five video podcasts to supplement the Disease Detectives exhibition. Four of these podcasts focused broadly on infectious diseases and one podcast was an overview of the KAYSC.
