The Norwegian Nobel Committee has bestowed the 2007 Nobel Peace Price equally upon the scientists of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Al Gore, former vice-President of the United States of America, with the same motivation: «for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change».

The idea of using communication research to develop natural resources histories has been documented in several studies, but I contend that these methods are largely underutilized. The point of this paper is to demonstrate how the use of one communication research method—lengthy personal face-to-face interviews analyzed with qualitative methods—can aid efforts to develop histories pertaining to the environment.

In mid-2007, the Sciencenter's executive director, Charlie Trautmann, traveled to Europe to survey a wide variety of science museums, centers, and other informal educational organizations and learn how they communicate the subjects of sustainability and global warming to the public. His report includes a new tool, called the "Museum Sustainability Index," which museums can use to assess their own progress in both becoming more sustainable organizations and communicating the science of sustainability to the public.

The media are the most pervasive disseminators of informal science education in this country.
