The San Francisco Zoological Society will use this planning grant to involve representatives of their audience in the development of the learning experiences that will be encorporated into their new exhibit program "ZooWEB: Worldwide Education for Biodiversity." They will bring together an Advisory Panel made up of representatives of a broad spectrum of potential and current zoo visitors (traditionally underserved groups, formal education specialists, people with special needs, family groups, scientists) and science educators to meet with the zoo's Planning Team who are developing the master interpretive plan called ZOO Web. ZooWEB will adapt ecological themes and topics from the section of Systems and Interactions in the California State Science Framework for Public Schools. The planning activity is a modification of a business model designed to understand and meet customer needs by constant improvement of product and service quality pioneered by W. Edwards Deming. This is a considerable departure from the traditional manner in which zoo interpretation is developed. Thus, the Zoo will implement a new approach to exhibit development, one that begins with focusing on visitors' interests in science, their needs, learning styles, perceptions of zoos, etc. Data will be gathered by a number of techniques including focus groups, interviews, and surveys. Results of the planning activity will be broadly disseminated.

Under the Small Grants for Exploratory Research Guidelines, Serrell and Associates will do "A Meta-Analysis of Visitor Time/Use in Museum Exhibitions." The research will examine the long considered and debated questions revolving around visitors expenditure of their time (duration and allocation) in science museums exhibits. Serrell will undertake the largest, systematic study of its kind. Using a large number of systemically made observations of visitors time/use, baseline data will be developed that will answer some of the fundamental questions about visitor's movements in an exhibit. This work builds on and expands, considerably, the current data base of observations from 48 exhibits to over 100 exhibitions. This is not a new research topic but it is one that deserves more attention because it has not been studied systematically. Researchers generally assume a positive correlation between time spent on task and learning but beyond that there are a number of provocative questions and unverified theories. Many questions lack sufficient data to draw conclusions. This study will provide statistical correlations between variables observed and will be absed on large, methodologically similar database, which does not currently exist.

Under the Planning Grant Guidelines, the Arizona Science Center will explore "Using Narrative to Introduce Science Concepts to Diverse Audiences at a Science Center." By bringing together a group of experts to review key questions about the uses and structure of narrative, the staff of the science center will 1) develop a strategy and range of approaches to science storytelling, 2) develop ideas for story premises and texts to interest visitors representing diverse populations and including women, people in non-technical occupations and minority families, 3) conduct research to determine visitor's attitudes to these materials in order to learn about the appeal and effectiveness of the narratives. Finally, they will synthesize and broadly disseminate their findings. The discussion will be focused on a comprehensive set of 120 exhibits entitled "How We Live With The Sun." The topics include light and optics; heat, cooling, and convection; weather, electricity; and technologies for harnessing solar energy. These topics represent the physical science that underlies the way people adapt to the desert and the ways in which Arizonans have applied knowledge of science fundamentals to useful ends.

Under the Small Grants for Exploratory Research Guidelines, the Association of Science-Technology Centers under the direction of Wendy Pollock and in cooperation with Lynn Dierking of Science Learning, Inc. will examine the literature, current methodology, and value of front-end studies in planning informal learning projects. The project "Front-End Studies: A Guidebook for Science Museums" will result in a publication available to a broad audience of practitioners developing informal learning programs. The objective of this work is to provide a resource that will encourage more extensive and fruitful use of front-end studies. Dissemination of results and abstracts of front-end study reports will also be posted on the ASTC Home Page. Research in science learning makes it clear that it is important for those who provide learning opportunities to begin with an understanding of what learners know, what they don't know, what misconceptions they may have, and what they are interested in learning. The more that the program design team understands about the learner, the stronger the learning activity. Unfortunately, not all informal educators realize the value of front-end studies and incorporate them in their program development protocols. The value of this research is to provide methodological guidance and research resources, along with clearly developed arguments, for practitioners interest in improving the conceptualization of the science learning activities.

The project conducts action research to learn more about how different groups use technology in meaningful ways, develops approaches that significantly increase access for underrepresented groups, and proposes ways in which technology might be modified or redesigned to engage, address, and represent diverse populations. The project targets children and young people from groups underrepresented with technology, informal and formal educators, community groups and organizations, researchers, policymakers and funders, industry, and the public. Products include: a report on the state of access of underrepresented groups to technology; case studies; guides to increasing community access to technology; guidelines about how to be critical viewers, users, and makers of technology; report on the issues involved in producing diverse and equitable technology design; exemplars and ideas for diversifying technology design; suggestions for software publishers and industry; commissioned papers on issues of access and design for particular underrepresented groups; an agenda for action; and interactive World Wide Web site; and a popular press book that synthesizes the knowledge gained through this project.

Under the Small Grants For Exploratory Research guidelines, Dr. George Hein will carry out basic research in informal learning in a museum setting. Dr. Hein will examine the literature and provide a summary of 1) what is known about the motivations of museums visitors, how they learn and how they react to the intellectual, social, and physical context of museums and 2) what is known about the theory and methods of visitor research in museums. These results will then be linked to a detailed discussion of constructivist learning theory and he will explore how that theory can be used to explain visitor behavior and how it can be used as a guide to research in learning in museums. Research will be carried out in England and the United States and will include a thorough review of the relevant literature written in English and extensive consultations with other professionals working on the theory of informal learning in museum settings. The research will result in a monograph that will be broadly disseminated. Although focused particularly on learning in a museum setting, the monograph will be of interest to all those interested in the informal learning process which includes museum professionals, formal educators, executives of community-based programs, and media producers.

Research Communications Ltd. will develop research designs, measurement, and analysis techniques for the assessment of the impacts of informal science learning television programming and other media. Experts in the fields of psychology, science education, communications research, and evaluation and testing will develop methodologies and instruments to: better assess impact on attitudes, cognition, and behavior for specific audiences, take into account the idea that informal science learning may take a variety of forms, and better assess cumulative impacts of television and other media on informal science learning. The PI's for the project will be Valerie Crane, President of RCL, and Beth Rabin and Suzanne Carter, both on the RCL staff. Advisors would include experts in research on children's television programming such as Ellen Wartella and Keith Mielke, specialists in inquiry-based learning and formal and informal science curricula such as Matthew Schneps, and specialists in evaluation and testing such as Edward Chittenden.

Digital image processing offers several possible new approaches to the teaching of a variety of mathematical concepts at the middle-school and high-school levels. There is reason to believe that this approach will be successful in reaching some "at-risk" students that other approaches miss. Since digital images can be made to reflect almost any aspect of the real world, some students may have an easier time taking an interest in them than they might with artificial figures or images resulting from other graphics- oriented approaches. Using computer-based tools such as image processing operators, curve-fitting operators, shape analysis operators, and graphical synthesis, students may explore a world of mathematical concepts starting from the psychologically "safe" territory of their own physical and cultural environments. There is reason to hope that this approach will be particularly successful with students from diverse backgrounds, girls and members of minority groups, because the imagery used in experiments can easily be tailored to individual tastes. The work of the project consists of creating detailed designs of the learning modules, implementing them on microcomputers, and evaluating their effectiveness in a variety of ways, using trials with students at Rainier Beach High School, which is an urban public high school having an ethnically diverse student body and a Macintosh computer laboratory.

This project will explore new ways to reach a broadcast audience wider than those who normally would watch an NSF funded television program on PBS. The PI will define new, non-competitive relationships between PBS and other broadcast or cable venues and will explore incentives for pursuing such relationships. The specific tasks to be conducted under the grant include: developing and testing procedures for distributing a program or series in a venue in addition to PBS, implementing such distribution, and evaluating the impact on audience size in the new venue as well as on subsequent broadcast on PBS. The final report will document the results of this research and describe the steps required to arrange for multiple venues. This project represents examination of an untested idea, the results of which may establish the basis for significantly increasing the impact of broadcast programming supported by NSF. Traditionally, when PBS has agreed to schedule a program or series, they have insisted on a window of exclusivity for a period three years. If the data from this project indicates that broadcast of a PBS program in a new venue reaches new audiences and, potentially, attracts some of that audience to PBS, it should establish a more open attitude on the part of PBS toward multiple venues at a much earlier time.

The Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) is requesting $50,000 to investigate and report on education activities linking science centers with schools. The research will examine the nature and levels of service currently provided by science centers, and produce a report that describes the current status with an emphasis on understandings that provide insight for program planning. The study will gather information from both museums and schools and museums where collaborative efforts are not occurring to investigate the barriers that have discouraged linkages.

The Attitudes Toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) is a 40 question, 4-factor survey designed to measure high school and college students’ attitudes toward mathematics. Unlike other math assessments, the ATMI was designed to be brief while also capturing multiple factors that contribute to one’s attitude about math.
