The Kaulele Kapa Exhibit was created to explore the effectiveness of a Hawaiian culture-based framework and approach in increasing learner engagement and depth of knowledge in STEM among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI) learners. The exhibit utilized hands-on and interactive activities, coupled with scientific and cultural information, to create relevant learning experiences for these communities. To determine the effectiveness, exhibit attendees were invited to complete a survey that asked about how the exhibit influenced their interest and understanding of STEM and Hawaiian culture

Snow: Tiny Crystals, Global Impact is a 2,500 ft traveling exhibition about: how snow shapes and sustains life on Earth, the impacts of climate change on snow, and the importance of our collective engagement to take action. The exhibition will be installed at OMSI during winter 2021-2022 for summative evaluation and learning research.

This poster, which was presented in Alexandria, VA at the CAISE AISL PI meeting in February 2019, summarizes the Winter Worlds/Snow: Musuem Exhibit, Educational Outreach, and Learning Research collaborative project that engages audiences in snow as a platform to explore Earth’s climate system and explores how culture affects STEM learning in informal settings.
This poster was presented at ASTC 2016 in Tampa, Florida. Climate change can be abstract to visitors, but seeing, touching and smelling permafrost can make it seem more real. This poster shares lessons about bringing an ISE program to rural Alaska, and how this University & Museum partnership leverages real objects from frozen ground to engage child and adult learners alike in the emotions of climate change.
Basing mainly on author's direct involvement in some science communication efforts in India, and other reports, this contribution depicts and analyses the present science communication/ popularization scenario in India. It tries to dispel a myth that rural people don't require or don’t crave for S&T information. It discusses need for science and technology communication, sustaining curiosity and creating role models. This paper describes a complex process being undertaken by a major Canadian institution, the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature. The evaluation process is systematic, multi-faceted and demonstrates the fruitful interaction between evaluation and gallery development. The front-end phase is the focus of the paper. Discussion concentrates on the elements of the process which are unique to the Canadian experience, specifically the whole community aspect of this process (wherein input was from sources distant from the physical setting of the institution), and the mix of novel and "traditional"
In this article, Lisa Eriksen, Executive Director of the California Exhbition Resources Alliance (CERA), describes the structure and success of this traveling exhibition consortium for small institutions. Eriksen discusses why CERA is a model for museum professionals in small institutions on how to collaborate to provide varied and quality exhibitions and programs to their audiences.
This white paper is the product of the CAISE Formal-Informal Partnerships Inquiry Group, which began work during a July 2008 ISE Summit organized by CAISE. Their examination of what the authors call "the hybrid nature of formal-informal collaborations" draws on relevant theoretical perspectives and a series of case studies to highlight ways in which the affordances of formal and informal settings can be combined and leveraged to create rich, compelling, authentic, and engaging science that can be systematically developed over time and settings.
