"Strengthening Networks, Sparking Change: Museums and Libraries as Community Catalysts" combines findings from a literature scan and input from the library, museum and community revitalization fields with case studies about the experiences and vision of museums and libraries working to spur change in their communities. It describes the complementary conceptual frameworks of social wellbeing and collective impact and explains how libraries and museums can use these concepts to partner with community-based organizations, government agencies and other cultural or educational organizations. This project proposes using three complementary strategies to engage, inform and inspire large audiences. (1) A national tour called "Stories from a Changing Planet" that will include in-person presentations and hands-on activities by Polar scientists at science centers, museums, libraries and schools across the country. (2) the "HiDef video Science Story Capture Corp" team of professional videographers HD footage will be made available as public domain materials accessible to government research agencies, universities,science centers and others. (3) Video and Audio podcasts distributed throught iTunes, google, Yahoo and IPY websites. The project will have front end, formative and summative evaluations.
This article describes the Collectors' Corner Neighborhood Trading Places (CCNTP) program. CCNTP is a collaboration between the Science Museum of Minnesota, the R.H. Stanford Library branch of the Washington County Library, and the Highland Park Library branch of the Saint Paul Public Library. The CCNTP program invites children and visitors of all ages to bring natural objects to the location and share their knowledge about them, earning points which allow them to trade for other items.
