NOVA scienceNOW: Season Two Summative Evaluation

May 1, 2007 | Media and Technology, Public Programs, Informal/Formal Connections
Goodman Research Group, Inc. (GRG) conducted a summative evaluation of the second season of NOVA scienceNOW, the PBS series that explores cutting-edge scientific and technological innovation in real time. (GRG also served as the external evaluator for NOVA scienceNOW during Season One). In addition to the television series, WGBH-TV developed a companion website, a series of high school classroom activities, and a Science Cafe outreach initiative, designed to discuss, in non-academic environments, the latest developments in science. The Season Two evaluation included: 1) a viewer study conducted with 65 viewers who watched the first two episodes from Season Two, 2) a classroom activity study, which collected data from 13 high school teachers and their 329 students, and 3) two website surveys; one of 794 visitors to the companion website and a second of 752 visitors who had already completed initial website surveys for GRG either during Season One or Season Two of the evaluation. Respondents from all three of these evaluation components also provided extensive feedback about their experiences with the Science Cafes.
