Project Overview

The Salvadori Center will design and administer BRIDGES [Build, Research, Invent, Design, Grow and Explore through Science], an after-school program that uses investigations of the built environment to introduce and reinforce STEM concepts and skills, especially engineering concepts and the design process. The target audience is some of New York City’s highest needs young people: 8-12 year olds enrolled in after-school programs run by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). BRIDGES will begin with 5 sites serving 150 children in its first year. Five sites will be added annually until, by Year 5, BRIDGES is serving 625 children at 25 community centers; in Years 4 and 5, we will begin disseminating the program to community centers in the tri-state region. The Center will compile BRIDGES’ best activities into a Project Book for distribution to urban after-school providers throughout the country, as well as an interactive afterschool web page on the Salvadori website.
