Dig Deeper: A Companion Post to the Research Issue of ASTC's Dimensions Magazine

In June, the Center for Advancement of Informal Science Education (CAISE) re-launched as a one-stop shop of resources and connections for the informal science education (ISE) field. The project was funded by the (U.S.) National Science Foundation Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) Program (DRL-0638981/DRL-1212803). The re-design effort involved consolidating resources from multiple websites and tagging and writing descriptions for thousands of records to help resources be more easily searchable and accessible. In this companion post to the November/December 2013 issue of Dimensions magazine, the bi-monthly publication of the Association of Science-Technology Centers, we've compiled citations of the research that appeared in the issue. In some cases we've been able to obtain permission from authors to provide full-text copies of the articles. While visiting, we also invite you to search and browse the rich set of materials indexed in our Informal Commons collection including: Project Descriptions: Abstracts from NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning program (formerly Informal Science Education (ISE)) are included in the collection. Many have been updated by principal investigators and project team members. Additional projects in the collection include a growing number of contributions from other federal agencies and private foundations. Many projects are linked to corresponding evaluation reports and research products. Evaluation Reports and Products: Most evaluation reports in the collection have been contributed by evaluators and principal investigators of informal STEM learning projects. Other evaluation products include the Principal Investigators Guide to Managing Informal STEM Education Projects, which should prove particularly useful for principal investigators who have received funding from any directorate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) that addresses informal STEM education. The Guide will also inform prospective principal investigators and others who are managing evaluation. Research and Evaluation Instruments: This link includes evaluation reports with instruments included in their appendix and individual instruments contributed from Assessment Tools in Informal Science Education (ATIS). Research Products: Resources in this category includes research that informs informal STEM learning projects, citations of peer reviewed articles contributed from the community, articles from the Visitor Studies Association, and research briefs produced by the NSF funded project, Relating Research to Practice (RR2P). Reference Materials: This category of resources include mass media articles, conference proceedings, conference posters and presentations, and other articles and resources that appear outside the peer reviewed literature. ISE Evidence Wiki Articles: The wiki includes short statements of evidence about the impacts of informal STEM learning experiences with corresponding evidence and links to literature. Instructional Materials: These resources include science and math instructional materials contributed by the NSF-funded project When searching our collection, try applying tags to tags to narrow your results by learning environment, audience, and content.
